Statement on Miers Withdrawal
Some said Harriet Miers was a moderate. Some said she was a religious conservative. With such a limited record as a public figure and no record as a judge it was impossible to figure out what she stood for.
More importantly, Harriet Miers had neither the experience nor the independence that the job requires. Simply being loyal to the President is not a qualification for a seat on the Supreme Court.
Since June, we have been advocating for an independent, experienced, balanced nominee for the Court. Judge Ed Prado is the kind of person we need. He has 21 years of experience as a federal judge. He is not beholden to one political party - he has been nominated by Republican presidents and unanimously confirmed by Democrats in the Senate. He could be an historic nominee - the first Latino on the Supreme Court.
